A WORD OR TWO ABOUT
LETTERPRESS AND METAL TYPE
Dear Olive designs are created by hand and printed one by one on
an antique letterpress. Metal type lends a uniqueness to letterpress
that you can't get with any other method of printing.
Each letter is set like a puzzle (one that's backwards, by the way) to
form words. Unlike a computer font, type size can't be changed with
the click of a button. And because metal is unforgiving, the edges of
letters can wear away after years of use. This is why occasionally there's
a difference in how one letter looks from card to card. If a letter gets
too dull, it has to be discarded. And since there's a set quantity of
each letter to begin with, the typeface you want doesn't always have
all the letters you need. If this is the case, never fear. We can work
together to find the right typeface for you. (It's always a good idea to
note your "second choice" on your order form just in case.)
One more thing. Dear Olive's artwork is usually printed from
photopolymer plates. You may notice that this allows for a more
pronounced impression than metal type, which can be damaged if
pressed into the paper too deeply.
Feel free to contact Dear Olive if you have any questions.
